Intro to Fermented Beverage Making: From Sugar to Sip with OTTAWA CULTURE CLUB
Fermentation is the quiet magic behind some of the world’s most beloved drinks—beer, cider, wine, kombucha, and more. This introductory workshop explores the fundamentals of fermented beverage making in a hands-on, easy-to-understand way, no prior experience required.
We’ll cover the core principles of fermentation, including yeast and bacteria basics, sanitation, sugar sources, and flavour development. Participants will learn how different ingredients and techniques influence aroma, acidity, body, and alcohol content, with practical examples drawn from a range of fermented beverages.
Through guided demonstrations, tastings, and interactive discussions, you’ll gain the confidence to start fermenting safely at home and the foundational knowledge to explore more advanced techniques down the line.
You’ll learn:
-
What fermentation is and how it works
-
Key ingredients used in fermented beverages
-
Basic equipment and sanitation best practices
-
An overview of non-alcoholic beverage fermentation (kombucha, shrubs, and more!)
-
How fermentation shapes flavour, texture, and balance
Educational, hands-on, and a little bit magical—this workshop is the perfect entry point into the world of fermented drinks.
- A brief introduction
- A charcuterie-sharing board
- In-depth instruction and introduction to non-alcoholic, delicious fermented beverage making by expert Jonah Greenbaum-Shinder, founder of Ottawa Culture Club
