Champagne Pierre Gerbais Grains de Celles
Details
'Champagne Pierre Gerbais is a fourth-generation domaine in the Aube. It is spearheaded today by Aurélien Gerbais, who is unnervingly self-assured for his age, yet soft-spoken and humble. At Gerbais, there are old vines, organic vineyard management, intelligence, respect, passion, relevance, training, and enough drive to take this house to the very top of a small band of visionary champagne makers in the Aube who include Aurélien's friend and neighbour Cédric Bouchard, and the small houses of Marie Courtin, Jacques Lassaigne, Ulysse Collin, Horiot, Vouette et Sorbée, etc.' - Becky Wasserman & Co.
This rare champagne has a small portion of Pinot Blanc in its blend; while Champagne typically only allows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier as dominant grapes in their sparkling wines. However! They have been allowed four other white grape varieties as blending wines: Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier, and Arbane (yes, this whole time!). These varieties make up less than .3% of grape plantings in the region. Due to the growing climate issues in many of our wine regions (read: our entire planet), as of 2021, Champagne also invited a hybrid grape into the mix: fungus-resistant Voltis.
Region: Celles-sur-Ource, Champagne, France
Grapes: Chardonnay + Pinot Noir + Pinot Blanc
Tasting Notes: wildflowers, honeycomb, lemon balm, oyster shell
