Story of the 2024 Acid Head Reisling
The 2024 Acid Head Riesling is the second time we have bottled a Riesling under this name, the last vintage made was in 2016. This bottling was created to offer a different take on the Riesling fruit we have access to at our satellite vineyard, Nedelko Vineyards, located on the Twenty Mile Bench in Niagara. The Acid Head Riesling stands in stark contrast to our Righteous Dude Riesling bottling, featuring a dryer profile, and a greater focus on the bracing acidity the varietal is so well known for. Time to let your freak flag fly!
Growing Season
Much like our estate, The Twenty Mile Bench experienced an extended growing season in 2024 which allowed for perfect maturity and excellent flavour development. The harvest season on the bench was favorable, with warm September temperatures that allowed for excellent development of acidity in the Reisling growing in the regions and a typical yield at harvest.
Vineyard
The fruit for our Rieslings come from the Nedelko Vineyards, a small, certified sustainable site on the Twenty Mile Bench in Niagara. The vineyard is known for its clay, limestone, and shale soils, which help give Riesling its precision and lively edge. On September 27, the grapes were hand picked at perfect ripeness and carefully brought back to Rosehall Run to be transformed into wine.
Fermentation
Fermentation took place in large 500-litre neutral French oak barrels, a choice that adds gentle texture without overshadowing the purity of the fruit. Three different yeasts were used, including one third that was left to ferment spontaneously, creating extra layers of character and complexity. The wine then rested in barrel for ten months, building subtle roundness while preserving freshness.
